Boone, North Carolina

An Appalachian Summer Festival continues a three-year partnership with the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival, which is known for an artful blend of film, activism, truth and community. This year's collaboration showcases two, not-to-be-missed films that highlight our nation's stewardship of the environment.

The National Parks: This is America (2009)

Directed by Ken Burns & Dayton Duncan
Not rated
Running time: 45 mins.

Filmed at some of America's most spectacular locales—from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades to the Gates of the Arctic—Ken Burns' landmark documentary explores the creation of America's National Parks. It is ultimately a story of people willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved, and in doing so reminding their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy. The film is a summary of the 12-hour, PBS series.

Fresh (2010)

Produced & Directed by Ana Sofia Joanes
Wild & Scenic Jury Award Winner (2010)
Not Rated
Running time: 72 min

This award-winning film celebrates farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources and morbid obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical and optimistic vision for the future of our food and our planet.

The Magic of Motion Pictures
An Appalachian Summer Festival's exploration of film continues in the 2010 season with five evenings devoted to unforgettable films about New York's theatre world, international issues and the environment. Come early, enjoy pre-film concessions, and then join festival board member and film enthusiast Dr. John Pfeifer in the auditorium for a fascinating introduction to each film.
