BOONE—The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts and An Appalachian Summer Festival are pleased to announce the winners of the 24th Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition. Their works will be installed on the Appalachian State University campus April 16 and 17, and the public is invited to participate in related celebration events.

An Installation Celebration will present the artists to the public Thursday, April 15, 2010, from 7 - 8:30pm with a round table discussion moderated by Hank Foreman, assistant vice chancellor for arts and cultural programs. This event will be held in the Lecture Hall of the Turchin Center, followed by a public reception for the artists in the Turchin Center's Mayer Gallery.
On Friday, April 16, and Saturday, April 17, 2010, the sculptors will install their work with the assistance of TCVA staff, gallery assistants and student volunteers. The public is invited to watch the installation process along the west side of campus, mostly viewable from Rivers Street, along Rivers Street, stretching from Walker Hall to the Duck Pond.
Having the artists interact with the community is an important part of the Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition, explains Turchin Center's Brook Bower, project director. "This year's sculptors continue to provide a unique opportunity to interact with Appalachian students and surrounding community, and our campus activities allow the artists to connect with each other to create dialogues and networking for future endeavors," she said. This year's competition continues the partnership with the Downtown Boone Development Association's (DBDA) Public Art Program. The DBDA Public Art Program has joined to extend public art into the downtown area by awarding three additional artists the opportunity to place their work into the community. - Julia Stout (Black Mountain, N.C.) Circa Cinq of Sacred Geometry Series; and
- Robert Winkler (Asheville, N.C.) Look Homeward Angles.
These sculptures will be placed at sites including: Melanie's Food Fantasy Restaurant, the Watauga County Arts Council at the Jones House and the Turchin Center.

About the Competition
The Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition is a national juried competition presented annually by the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. Made possible by the generosity of longtime arts supporters Martin and Doris Rosen, this national, juried competition continues a long-held tradition of showcasing the best of large-scale, contemporary American sculpture. Each year, sculptures are selected for exhibition, and are sited in outdoor, public settings across campus. A cash prize is awarded to the artist whose work is chosen as that year's Rosen Award winner. Since its establishment in 1987, The Rosen has become an integral part of An Appalachian Summer Festival, the university's annual multi-arts celebration, with the announcement of the Rosen Award winner, and the unveiling of the catalog coming during the festival's annual Sculpture Walk with this year's juror. The 24th Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Walk is scheduled on July 24, 2010 at 10am.

The Turchin Center is located at 423 West King St. in Boone, N.C. Hours are 10am - 6pm, Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday, and 12noon – 8pm Friday.
