"Varone puts the beating heart at the center of the work." - The Washington Post
"This is a company of master dancers, performing masterly choreography." - Newsday
From the company's first concerts in 1986, Doug Varone and Dancers has been singled out for its expansive choreographic vision, versatility, and technical prowess.
Led by choreographer and director Doug Varone, who is active in the realms of dance, theater, opera, film, television and fashion, the company maintains an active touring schedule. Doug Varone and Dancers has performed in more than 100 cities in 45 states across the U.S. and in Europe, Asia, Canada, and South America. The company has earned numerous awards and accolades, including two American Dance Festival Doris Duke awards, three awards from the National Dance Project and eight New York Dance and Performance (Bessie) Awards, earned by the company's dancers, designers, and
Varone himself.
Doug Varone and his company members are especially prized for their kinetic dexterity, musicality and acting instincts. Their performane on July 18 will include the highly acclaimed work Lux, a 22-minute piece with eight dancers featuring music by Philip Glass (The Light). Since its premiére in October 2006, the piece - and its choreographer - have met with rave reviews. The Washington Post lauds, "Lux is all about freedom. It is what dancing really feels like, the kind of dancing I might dream about: loose and sweeping in a spirit of exultation. [Doug Varone is] an exceptionally fluent dancemaker. There's an emotional breadth sometimes missing from so many other greats in modern dance."
